Lowering taxes through efficient delivery of public services
WRITE YOUR ELECTED OFFICIAL
RESD has developed a form letter to send to your elected officials in Albany to vote on four critical pieces of legislation that will help lower you tax bill before they adjourn at the end of June. The four pieces of legislation include the following:
1) Eliminate compensation and benefits for commissioners of special taxing districts 2) Transfer the management responsibilities of special taxing districts providing sanitary, refuse, or garbage services to the towns 3) Improve the transparency of special taxing districts through greater accountability 4) Require all special taxing districts to be held when other major elections are scheduled
HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO
Copy and paste the text of the letter below into an email and then send it to your elected official in Albany. We have provided the email addresses of all of the State Assemblymen and Senators on Long Island below. It's time to let the people in Albany know that enough is enough.
Dear Assemblyman / Senator << NAME >>,
I am writing to urge you to vote "yes" to four pieces of legislation that will serve to reform special taxing districts across the state. It is critical that this legislation be voted on before the Assembly and Senate adjourn at the end of June. By doing so, you will be helping to lower taxes for your constituents. These four common sense proposals will help to start making Long Island an affordable place to live once again.
The first eliminates compensation and benefits for commissioners of special taxing districts. If school board members and fire commissioners can volunteer their time without pay and benefits, so can commissioners of special taxing districts. The second transfers the management responsibilities of special taxing districts providing sanitary, refuse, or garbage services to the towns. Studies have conclusively shown that towns can provide the same level of service at a lower cost than the special taxing districts. The third improves transparency of special taxing districts through greater accountability to the public. We pay for these services through our hard earned tax dollars, we should be able to monitor them closely and easily. The last piece of legislation requires all special taxing district elections to be held on major election days. By greatly reducing the number of election days, participation will increase and we can have true local control over our public services.
You have fought on behalf of taxpayers before and you now have an excellent opportunity to again show voters that lowering taxes for residents is a priority of yours. You are known as someone who believes in efficient government delivered in a cost effective manner. I am confident you are aware that these four pieces of legislation will make a real difference for people who are struggling to make ends meet. Thank you for your support on this critical issue to residents of your district.
